FAQ

1. Where does Celtic Sea Salt® come from?

Each of our salts comes from a unique place!  Here is a list of our Celtic Sea Salt® salts and their source.

Light Grey Celtic, Fine Ground Celtic, Flower of the Ocean:   FRANCE

Celtic Pink Sea Salt, Fossil River:  SPAIN

Gourmet Kosher: GUATEMALA

Celtic Kosher Coarse and Fine:  COLIMA MEXICO

Makai Pure:  HAWAII USA

Rare Body Bath Coarse and Fine:  VARIOUS

2. How is it harvested?

Here is a list of our salts and their respective harvesting methods:

Light Grey Celtic-  Hand harvested using method invented by the Celts who settled this region of France.  Seawater at high tide is trapped in estuaries until it evaporates to a brine, in which it is guided by the salt farmer through a series of clay-lined beds until by the end it is crystallizing.  The farmer uses wooden rakes to pull the sunken crystals imparted with the grey color from the bed of the harvesting ponds.  With little more done than natural draining, the yield is a moist, natural crystal salt with the brine, or “bitterns” still intact.

Fine Ground Celtic-  This salt comes from the Light Grey Celtic, just low-temperature dried and crushed for convenience. Great for baking and as a transition salt (looks the closest to regular salt)

Gourmet Kosher-  Hand harvested by salt farmers from lined beds where seawater is piped in and allowed to evaporate. As the crystals form they are kept in motion, yielding a beautiful, tiny, delicate crystal.
Makai Pure- Greenhouse harvested salt.  The seawater is taken from deep ocean currents where there is higher salinity, which yields a high-mineral salt with beautiful natural chunks and flakes.

Kosher Celtic-  Naturally harvested from salt ponds where the seawater is naturally filtered up through the ground.  This is the most moist salt we have.  Also for its price the highest minerals.  Even the fine ground variety is very moist, full of the mineral-rich brine.

Flower of the Ocean-  This is the “cream of the crop” of salts.  By skimming the crystals off of the surface of the brine, only the most delicate crystals are caught before they sink to become the Light Grey Celtic salt.  Flower of the Ocean is a culinary treasure, known as a “finishing salt” or an “expediting salt” to be pinched on food right before serving.  No need for a grinder with this salt, as the crystals are easily crushed between the fingers.

3. Is there Iodine?
4. What is your best salt?
5. How do you ensure it is just salt?

We strive to ensure that the salt you get from us is just salt as Mother Nature intended.  Our producers test at the source and we do annual 3rd party testing.  We test for pollutants like mercury, lead, and aluminum.  We also test for radiation, petroleum, and micro-plastics.

6. Where I can I find your salt?

Our salt can be found at these fine Retailers.

A Grain of Salt Returns!

This "A Grain of Salt" Blog is an extension to our retired newsletter "A Grain of Salt" that we had for over 20 years up to 2010.  We are still harvesting grains of information as well as grains of salt, and are excited to return to bring you to your best potential through our products and information.  Our intention is to take life "with a grain of salt" and to help one another on our personal paths of growth.  Thank you for joining us and sharing this journey!

The Grain and Salt Society was the name from 1976 until around 2004 and Selina had to make a decision about the name.  Firstly, we were not selling as many grains, and the array of products we were carrying were much more than just grains.  There had to be a way to encompass our growing products list with something different. Secondly, the salt used to be in high demand and short supply, so if you were a member of the "society" then you would be first in line to get your salt, while others may have to wait.  The increase in salt sales in USA was great for the producers, and as they saw more demand for their unrefined sea salt, they began expanding production.  Now there is enough salt for everyone, and also salts from different pristine harvesting regions of the world!  The name Selina Naturally was very fitting to the new mission of the company, and is today known as Selina Naturally Home of the Celtic Sea Salt® Brand.

The newsletter "A Grain of Salt" records back to 1996. It's intention was to educate readers on the lifestyle movement towards change for the better. This could be physical, mental, or spiritual. "A Grain of Salt™" would have about 40 pages, articles, and a product list.  Four times per year we mailed it out to thousands of members of the Grain and Salt Society, our original company name. Here is an example of what one of the first "A Grain of Salt" newsletters looked like:

In the mid '90s, Selina used to answer the phones for The Grain & Salt Society. When she would take the calls, she realized that there was a large flow of the same questions that she would assist customers with. This was all before the internet, so getting educated on health and well-being lifestyles was only found in books, tapes, and newsletters (not on your cell phone or laptop computer).  The questions customers would ask were on topics such as "what else can I do to improve my health with food change choices I can make?"  Selina’s answer would be from what she knew at the time, which was a “Macrobiotic approach”. Macrobiotics means "the great life" and is an Eastern approach to health.  Selina was completely absorbed in the natural lifestyle movement, and with so many other influencers taking the approach to changes in eating, meditation and exercise habits, the revolution began. Other newsletters were on the same page, such as from the following influencers.  Today almost everyone is on the web.

These are just some of the people that used their passion and voice to educate the world about lifestyle options that can convert to a better body and person.  Selina realized these influential people had a message to be heard and she wanted to share their message to her audience. At that time this was a pretty big following. When an influencer would be writing their book, they would want to educate their readers on foods that are available to enhance the journey to well-being. They would contact Selina and interview her and get more information regarding the salts she researched and offered. Selina would return the opportunity by having them writing in her newsletter. This would give the writer the attention of other people that have never heard of these solutions to now have a new resource for well being advancement.  What a great relationship and what a great way to give credibility to Selina’s offerings to contribute to a healthy lifestyle change!  In addition to the quarterly newsletter, Selina also had a product catalog including offerings of products that people have never heard of.  So for the time, the platform was exceptional, and there was not the Wholefoods, Sprouts, other retail stores, and online stores like Amazon that have made natural products more accessible. As time passed the hard copy method of being educated also passed to a new way, which was the internet. Selina was advised to stop the printed newsletter and go electronic. This was in 2010. She stopped printing the newsletter and made it available on the internet as an electronic newsletter. This was nice, but it didn’t give Selina the feedback and interaction she was used to with her printed newsletter, so she didn’t continue the time to put into it any longer.

The Celtic Sea Salt Blog was just not quite the same in electronic format as it was when it arrived in your mail box 4 times a year.  When our customers got the hard copy they would read it completely and save for future reference.  A stack of magazines then is like a list of bookmarks on our computer today, but had more of a sense of feel and you could hear the pages turning.  Even without the "A Grain of Salt" quarterly publication, Selina still has a desire to have a place to share the wealth of information she came across in her networking.  Each issue of A Grain of Salt™ would include a "Letter from Selina" and to this day are all still timeless.  Here is an example of one:

What will the new "A Grain of Salt" have to offer?  We are going to pulse it as we go along, but want to share stories of our customers, feedback, recipes using Celtic Sea Salt® products, salty trends, health updates, enlightenment, and articles from our influencers.  We will also highlight our products that support a healthy lifestyle. So here we are and we will strive to continue to be a valuable resource for you! All aboard the ship that will sail the salty sea of joy!
