    • 1. Where does Celtic Sea Salt® come from?

Each of our salts comes from a unique place!  Here is a list of our Celtic Sea Salt® salts and their source.

Light Grey Celtic, Fine Ground Celtic, Flower of the Ocean:   FRANCE

Celtic Pink Sea Salt, Fossil River:  SPAIN

      Gourmet Kosher: GUATEMALA

Celtic Kosher Coarse and Fine:  COLIMA MEXICO

      Makai Pure:  HAWAII USA

Rare Body Bath Coarse and Fine:  VARIOUS

      2. How is it harvested?

Here is a list of our salts and their respective harvesting methods:

Light Grey Celtic-  Hand harvested using method invented by the Celts who settled this region of France.  Seawater at high tide is trapped in estuaries until it evaporates to a brine, in which it is guided by the salt farmer through a series of clay-lined beds until by the end it is crystallizing.  The farmer uses wooden rakes to pull the sunken crystals imparted with the grey color from the bed of the harvesting ponds.  With little more done than natural draining, the yield is a moist, natural crystal salt with the brine, or “bitterns” still intact.

Fine Ground Celtic-  This salt comes from the Light Grey Celtic, just low-temperature dried and crushed for convenience. Great for baking and as a transition salt (looks the closest to regular salt)

Gourmet Kosher-  Hand harvested by salt farmers from lined beds where seawater is piped in and allowed to evaporate. As the crystals form they are kept in motion, yielding a beautiful, tiny, delicate crystal.
Makai Pure- Greenhouse harvested salt.  The seawater is taken from deep ocean currents where there is higher salinity, which yields a high-mineral salt with beautiful natural chunks and flakes.

Kosher Celtic-  Naturally harvested from salt ponds where the seawater is naturally filtered up through the ground.  This is the most moist salt we have.  Also for its price the highest minerals.  Even the fine ground variety is very moist, full of the mineral-rich brine.

Flower of the Ocean-  This is the “cream of the crop” of salts.  By skimming the crystals off of the surface of the brine, only the most delicate crystals are caught before they sink to become the Light Grey Celtic salt.  Flower of the Ocean is a culinary treasure, known as a “finishing salt” or an “expediting salt” to be pinched on food right before serving.  No need for a grinder with this salt, as the crystals are easily crushed between the fingers.

      3. Is there Iodine?
      4. What is your best salt?
      5. How do you ensure it is just salt?

We strive to ensure that the salt you get from us is just salt as Mother Nature intended.  Our producers test at the source and we do annual 3rd party testing.  We test for pollutants like mercury, lead, and aluminum.  We also test for radiation, petroleum, and micro-plastics.

More than Just Light Grey Celtic Sea Salt®

Celtic Sea Salt® was founded in 1976 by Jacques DeLangre. He was importing the French Sel Gris to America and selling it as the term he coined "Celtic Sea Salt". This turned into a brand and a business. For years we only offered the Light Grey Celtic®, Fine Ground Celtic®, and Flower of the Ocean®. As time went on, unrefined salt producers from other locations would reach out to us to see if we were interested in carrying their salt. When we were impressed with the harvesting practices and mineral profiles, we would add more unrefined salts to our Celtic Sea Salt® collection. Now we offer salts from multiple locations, including France, Spain, Portugal, Guatemala, Hawaii USA, and Colima Mexico. Here is a little more about the salts we sell here at Selina Naturally home of the Celtic Sea Salt® brand. I hope learning more about each of our salts will help you to make a more informed decision on which salt to buy and why. Salt Well to Live Well!
Light Grey Celtic® is the original Celtic Sea Salt® since 1976. Harvested in France from clay-lined beds. Natural, moist crystals with the light grey color.

Fine Ground Celtic® comes from the Light Grey Celtic® just low temperature dried and crushed for convenience. Great for baking and as a "transition" salt for those who are new to unrefined sea salt.

Flower of the Ocean® is the salt crystals skimmed off the surface of the brine. Considered a gourmet finishing or expediting salt, what you would use to "finish" the meal, the last thing you do before serving is add a pinch of Flower of the Ocean®.

Celtic® Makai Pure™ is the salt we have from Hawaii. The producers take seawater from deep currents where there is higher salinity, and harvest in a clean greenhouse environment. The salt crystallizes into flakes and chunks and is of the most mineral rich salts we carry. The crystals are a brilliant white.

Celtic® Pink Sea Salt is an active ocean sea salt, not mined like Himalayan salt. It is produced with sustainable methods in Spain and gets its color from the red volcanic clay lining the beds. This is a great all-purpose salt. It is dry and crushed to a size that can work in a shaker or grinder.  Those who love Himalayan salt are likely to enjoy this Pink Sea Salt even more.

Celtic® Gourmet Kosher is from Guatemala. 3rd generation salt farmers harvest here seasonally. The salt is moist, tiny, delicate crystals, and perfect for an all-purpose salt. We do not offer a shaker or grinder for the Gourmet Kosher yet, as it is easiest to just pinch and serve from the bag or a dish.

Celtic® Kosher Coarse is our newest salt from Colima, Mexico. The seawater is filtered by the Earth as it comes up through the ground and the salt is very high mineral and pure. Chunky moist colorless crystals with exceptional mineral content and flavor, the Celtic Kosher is on the rise to be our favorite salt.

Celtic® Kosher Fine comes from the Celtic Kosher Coarse just crushed for convenience. This salt is not dried so heads up it is a very moist ground salt. With a great full spectrum mineral profile, the Celtic Kosher Fine is an all-purpose mineral rich salt with a wonderful flavor.

As you see from the above list of unrefined salts we now carry, it can be difficult to decide. Each of our salts comes from a unique place and has some variations, but you can rest assured that our salts are unrefined and have nothing added or removed. Any salt choice you make with us will be a good one.  Here on question #7 of our FAQ www.celticseasalt.com/faq you can find spec sheets for all of our salts. This helps to compare the sodium chloride, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and pH, among other values. Thank you for choosing Celtic Sea Salt®!
